Going
out of Town?
A significant percentage of emergencies happen when
the owners are away. Ask our staff for an Absent Owner
Form. We will keep all of your necessary information
on file while you are away.
Heat Stroke
What Is Heat Stroke/Hyperthermia?
Heat stroke is the leading cause of hyperthermia (when
the body temperature exceeds 42°- 43°C). Many
systems in the body are severely affected. Heat stroke
usually occurs in dogs that are confined in a warm place
with no access to cool / shady areas or water. It can
also occur in certain breeds (i.e. Bulldogs, Shar Peis)
who cannot regulate their body temperature (blow off
heat) on warm days.
How do you prevent it?
Dogs should always have access to shady /cool /well
ventilated areas and fresh cold water.
Avoid excessive exercise on warm days, and excessive
exposure to sunlight. They should NEVER be locked in
a car with closed windows. Take extra care with flat
faced dogs (Bulldogs, Pugs, etc.) and thick haired dogs.
Indications Of Heat Stroke:
History (i.e. has been in a hot environment), collapse,
panting or respiratory distress, brick red gums, bloody
diarrhea, tremors and seizures.
Treatment:
See A Veterinarian Right Away! Patients will be treated
with IV fluids, cooling, oxygen, blood tests, etc.
