Donor Screening

Can any pet donate blood?
No.  For the sake of the donor, and the recipient, donors must meet certain criteria.  For example, a teacup poodle or a smooth coated fox terrier cannot donate the volume of blood required for banking blood.  Owners who want to help other pets may be disappointed that their own pet can't donate, but we the safety of our donors is our prime consideration.

Here are some of the general characteristics of a suitable blood donors:

  • A healthy adult cat or dog with a calm and friendly disposition
  • No history of contagious or serious disease
  • Has never received a blood transfusion
  • Is up to date on vaccines
  • Not on a raw food diet why not raw?

Dogs
  • Spayed (females)
  • Between 1 – 6 years old
  • Weighs at least 50lbs

Cats
  • Both males and females must be neutered or spayed
  • Between 1 – 6 years old
  • Weighs at least 10lbs
  • Must be indoors only
