About the Veterinary Technician Team

By Lena Schneider, RAHT VTS(ECC)

The VAEC Veterinary Technician (VT) Team is composed of dedicated professionals/animal lovers, who all hold diplomas in Animal Health Technology from programs that are accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. Two members of the VT team have achieved certification by the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians and more are working towards certification.

VTs are on rotating shifts 24 hours a day to assist our staff veterinarian (SV) team with triage and stabilizing incoming emergencies. VTs perform many challenging procedures such as placing intravenous catheters, producing radiographs (x-rays), taking blood samples and running in-house lab work.

These special professionals give particular attention to the critical nursing care for hospitalized patients. VTs administer medications, monitor patients vital signs and give blood transfusions. Above all, the patient is made comfortable at all times. This is a rewarding part of their job – to give patients the attention and affection they need (and deserve)!

The VTs continue to expand their knowledge in order to provide up-to-date emergency and critical care for the patients at Animal ER.
