Can any pet donate blood? No. It is for the sake of the donor as well as for the recipient that donors must meet certain criteria. For example, a teacup poodle or a smooth coated fox terrier cannot donate the volume of blood required for banking blood. Caring pet owners may be disappointed if their pet can't donate, but the safety of our donors is our prime consideration.
Here are some of the general characteristics of a suitable blood donor:
- A healthy adult cat or dog with a calm and friendly disposition
- No history of contagious or serious disease
- Has never received a blood transfusion
- Is up to date on vaccines
- Not on a raw food diet (see Why Not Raw? )
Dogs
- Spayed (females)
- Between 1 – 6 years old
- Weighs at least 50lbs
Cats
- Both males and females must be neutered or spayed
- Between 1 – 6 years old
- Weighs at least 10lbs
- Must be indoors only
If you are interested in volunteering for this very special program, please contact the VABS team by email.
The screening process begins with an email history form, and a review of your pet's medical records. If your pet fits the criteria for the program, we will set up an appointment to meet you and your very special friend. When you come in, a veterinarian will perform a complete physical exam. If your pet is found to be an appropriate potential donor, a small amount of blood will be drawn and sent to the laboratory for blood typing and screening panel. Once your pet’s blood type is known and the blood panel reveals a clean bill of health, we will let you know the likelihood of you and your companion being called for a donation.
